After reading Hegarty’s Attributes of Open Pedagogy article, I have some personal insights. What is open education? As we all know, the definition of open education is to realize the free sharing of educational resources and teaching materials. Let people can search knowledge from internet and learn it by themselves. This method is different from the single generation of knowledge from the teacher in the past.

I want to talk about my thoughts in two ways.

First of all, for students, open education will undoubtedly benefit students a lot. For me, I am a third year economic student in Uvic. If every economic class requires a book, it is an expensive for the student. Generally speaking, the cost of a new book is about 200-300. Some engineeringstudents’ books are undoubtedly more expensive. Although in some classes student can find second-hand books luckily, it is also a small expense for students. If open education is realized, not only the teaching fee be saved, but also an increase in the convenience of knowledge and time saving. Because students can save time in the bookstore to find a book. And all they need to do is just click on the search on the Internet. it brings us lots of convenient and fast. Even it is good for environmental protection. Because books need trees to supply. In addition, online teaching resources are now diverse, and students can easily acquire knowledge by themselves. For example, youtube is a great learning resource. I have a Digital arts course this semester. This is a class about design. And I like this course very much. Because when I was young, my dream was to be a designer. But this semester is a short summer semester, with 20 days of continuous learning. To be honest, for an economics student like me. Skilled learning and mastery of knowledge are difficult in such a short period of time. So in my personal time, youtube saved me, and I kept open youtube to learn the knowledge of my class. I have learned from youtube on the details of photoshop, animation, illustrator. I am not mean that the teacher is not good at teaching. My point is that my foundation is very poor. I can’t master the teacher’s knowledge in a short time course. Imagine if there is no open source like youtube, I can only go to the teacher’s office to ask questions. This is an inconvenient behavior for me and for the teacher. So I am very grateful for the open resources on the network.

In the second aspect, for those who are not students, open resources on the Internet will undoubtedly help them a lot. Because a lot of knowledge is connected. For example, an engineer has done his own planning drawings. He needs to show his views at a conference. At this time, you need to use the knowledge of computer software. The network makes pictures, show on the media, and makes stereoscopic displays. These knowledge are not feasible for a person who will only know engineer. What should he do? He cannot take a course just for those basic computer software knowledge it will waste lot of time. At this time, the open resources on the Internet can help him learn better. For those who graduate or have not attended school, open resources are undoubtedly opening another door forthem. Give them a second chance to learn.

In our course material, the authors of “Attributes of Open Pedagogy: A Model for Using Open Educational Resource” also explained eight interrelated attributes. Among them, I think those three viewpoints are most important that People, Openness, and Trust, Innovation and Creativity, Sharing ideas and Resources. Because if people can trust each other, strive to innovate, and strive to share knowledge to achieve common progress. In this way, open education will get better and better.

In addition, I agree with Jesse Stommel in this article. Students should be the creators of knowledge and not the communicators. The development of knowledge lies in constant innovation and development. If every student simply passes on knowledge, there will not be such a great scientist born. Like Einstein, Edison, Copernicus and so on. I hope that every student should have his or her own thinking and have an independent ability to think independently. I have seen a closed movie. In the old society, a student was beaten very hard by the teacher because of he questioning about the teacher’s method. But fortunately he has an open minded parent who supports him after listening to his ideas. Let him believe that he has his own ideas. His name is Pan yuanshi,  he is a successful scientist. In reality, each of us should have such a learning concept. Student should to dare to question. Have your own thinking. In this way, there will be a variety of successful man in the future.
